Canals

Quick Navigation

Back

Close under the hills the sub soil water lies nearer to the surface in the form of either isolated pools or in rivulets which, after flowing a short distance, disappear below the surface, in all other parts of the valley the subsoil water lies at a great depth rendering Irrigation from wells impossible.

Under these conditions canals and reservoirs afford the only means for Irrigation, and almost the only means for supplying the people with drinking water.

With the deputation in 1837 of Captain Caultey to make an estimate of the cost of a canal from the Tons river near the village Bijapur, a commencement was made on the construction of Dun canals.
